Outboard Motor Maintenance training - How you will learn to service your engine

How you will learn

Practical Training

You receive instruction in a workshop. You’ll get some time to discuss workshop safety and internal combustion, but the practical demonstrations start on the first morning, and you'll be hands-on by the first afternoon. The groups are kept small to allow sufficient practice time

Presentations

You will see Planning the Boat Trip and Checking Boat Machinery. These lessons cross over with our Vessel Operations Level 2 programme, you are welcome to view the other videos in the LMS. Your personal tutor will provide you with a link to the SSNT OMM LMS at ssnauticaltraining.myicourse.com

Pdfs

Students are provided with SSNT’s OMM HSE Guidelines.which contains job hazard analyses for workshop activities, and the SCV Code’s requirements for outboard motors and open boat: electrical, bilge, fuel and exhaust systems.

Formative Assessments

You must record at least 70% in both assessments to get the unit credit.

Project and products

You have 3 projects to complete.

Project 1

You are required to download a service manual for an outboard engine you are familiar with. Submit the downloaded manual to your assessor electronically.

Project 2

Students are given a task book at the start of training and must seek to complete all of the tasks during the training. The assessor signs to confirm that the task was completed satisfactorily. The task book must be completed and submitted in hard copy.

Project 3

You are required to keep a workshop diary (in a style of your own choosing). You are to note, daily and as a minimum, the jobs done, the tools used, and the spares used. Submit your diary to the assessor.
