Assessment Methods 

Formative Assessments VO Core online

There are 19 tests covering VO Core topics with multiple choice questions. Students must get 70% in each and every test. Students have multiple attempts at the tests.

Formative Assessments Coastal Navigation Workbook 1

There are workbook exercises covering VO Core topics with short answer questions. Students must submit the completed workbook and copy charts for grading.

Summary Assessment Core

Written Summary Assessment Core

This is a single sitting, 3 hours written examination in classic examination room conditions. This written assessment is based on the VO Core online units and the BGNCC textbook. This assesses the student’s literacy and recall skills.

Oral Summary Assessment Core

This is a single, general oral assessment. This oral assessment is based on the Core online and BGNCC textbook. The ability to communicate verbally, as well as navigation and seamanship, is assessed. 

Formative Assessment VO Advanced online 

There are 16 tests covering VO Advanced topics with multiple choice questions. Students must get 70% in each and every test. Students have multiple attempts at the tests.

There are workbook exercises covering VO Advanced topics with short answer questions. Students must submit the completed workbook and copy charts for grading.

Summary Assessments Final

Written Summary Assessment Final

This is a single sitting, 3 hours written examination in classic examination room conditions. This written assessment is based on the Advanced VO online units and the Project. This assesses the student’s literacy, numeracy, sketching and research skills.

Oral Summary Assessment Final

These are multiple, more targeted oral assessments. The oral assessments correspond to the sections of the Trainee Onboard Task Book. Each individual oral assessment can be administered right after the Practical Assessment. The ability to communicate verbally, as well as navigation and seamanship, is assessed.

Practical Summary Assessment Final

These are multiple, targeted practical assessments. The practical assessments correspond to the sections of the Trainee Onboard Task Book. Each individual practical assessment is administered by an SSNT Assessor onboard a vessel moored or underway (except Passage Planning).  The ability to perform key vessel operations is assessed. The Oral Summary Assessment Final can be done right after the Practical Assessment.
